Coco De Mer's 'X': Too Taboo For You Beirut?

X-Rated Content. NSFW. Really NSFW.

A friend just sent us Coco De Mer's new video, 'X', and it's one hell of a production. That would be a job well done by TBWALondon who teamed up with renowned Photographer/Director John Rankin Waddell and several other directors — including Vicky Lawton, Trisha Ward and David Allain.

For those of you who are not familiar, Coco De Mer is a high-end London-based boutique that sells designer sex toys, lingerie and other clothing, erotic books and gifts. In their own words: "Coco de Mer is where you explore the exhilarating limits of your erotic imagination."

When the West nurtures sexual discovery and exploration through such boutiques, we here in Beirut still linger far behind. Sex toys and the entire erotica realm of provocative lingerie, books & gadgets are not yet commonplace sold items in Beirut. And if a store does sell them, it always feels so undercover - 'restricted area' style, you know, somewhere at the back of the store, 'behind the curtain'.

That is not to say that we as a people are not open to the idea of sex toys. We'd argue that it's quite the contrary. We talk about them, we research them, and we're pretty sure a couple of you have smuggled some in from abroad (winky wink).

So why is it still so taboo here in Beirut? There's a sure market for it.

In other words, someone needs to open a sex shop here already. There, we said it.

“The erotic doesn’t get the same overt attention as everything else on the cultural menu, so we created a film to surprise, excite and most importantly, encourage people to delve that little bit deeper into their fantasies—to reignite that connection.”
