This Sunday December 1st, Gemmayze was transformed into a pedestrian area with hundreds of people across the city walking its streets. This event called “Discover Gemmayze” is part of a pioneering, environmental, and political project “Achrafieh 2020”, which aims to transform the district of Achrafieh into a healthy environment, a dream space to live in - and it did just that. Kids running around, people walking their dogs (you'd be surprised how many people have dogs in Beirut), friends grabbing a beer and pizza by the sidewalk, all somehow created a rare sense of (not-so-often felt): community.
Both sides of Gemmayze were filled with stations of free entertainment involving art, music, sports, and environmental activities, delicious Lebanese food such as tabbouleh, sahlab, and manouche, and every bar and restaurant took to the streets, putting a few of their tables outside for the crowds.
We spent a few hours there and snapped a few shots. Here they are, enjoy.
